FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I expect a session to be like?

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. The initial paperwork is reviewed and I will ask questions about your history and goals. You can also ask any questions you have at any point. Usually in the second session, we will create a treatment plan together to ensure we are both on the same page in meeting your goals. Other sessions may involve "talk therapy," relaxation exercises, interactive activities, or other tools, depending on your needs.

How long does treatment last?

It depends on several factors, including inividual goals, severity of symptoms, number of sessions approved by insurance or EAPs, and client motivation and participation. A very general average is 8-10 sessions. I usually recommend sessions be held weekly at first, and then be spaced out to biweekly or monthly as progress is made.

Will my private information be shared with others?

Strict guidelines exist for protecting your information in counseling. Your information will not be shared with others. HIPAA rules apply to your records when it comes to electronic communication.

There are a few exceptions to confidentiality:

  • Threat of harm to self or others, including grave disability

  • Known or suspected child abuse

  • Known or suspected elder abuse

  • Court order, or other mandate of State and/or Federal Law

You may also choose to sign a release form to allow me to talk to someone about you. Minimal information will also be shared with payors (insurance) for billing purposes.

How much will counseling cost?

This will vary depending on the following:

  • Whether you are using insurance, health savings/flex spending accounts, or self-pay

  • Your individual deductible and copays

  • Number of sessions completed

To discuss cost, please email us today at info@aronoffcounseling.com.

What issues do people go to counseling for?

There are so many reasons to seek counseling! Some folks get help when things are going relatively well in life, but they want things to be a little better - such as maximizing career potential, managing stress more effectively, or enhancing relationship communication. Others may seek counseling when things are very difficult - such as during a divorce, when grieving a loss, or experiencing intense depression. No issue is too small or too big to seek help.

What types of clients do you see?

We work with teens and adults ages 12 and up. We provide individual, couples, and family counseling. We welcome clients of all different ages, races, sexual orientations, religions, genders, etc.

Will I have to lay on a couch and be analyzed?

In a word, "no." TV and movies have put some not-so-positive representations of counseling out there that are mostly untrue of therapy today. Our approach is a collaborative one, in which we are face-to-face, and work together to identify and work toward your goals. You, as the client, are the most integral part of the therapeutic process, and success depends largely on your level of participation and willingness to try on new perspectives and behaviors.
